Trident Sugarless
Dog ate gum with Xylitol. Anyone else?
My 9lb dog ate approximately 4 pieces of Trident with xylitol, which is toxic for dogs. I took her to the vet within an hour of her ingesting the gum and the vet induced vomiting. Howevever, I learned when I got home and did some research that the vet didn't follow treatment protocols (didn't offer to do an IV of fluid and gave her a charcol treatment which studies have shown to be ineffective for xylitol ingestion). In fact, the vet didn't even realize that Sugarless Gum contained an ingredient that is toxic to dogs.
Now I am worried. It's been a little over 3 hours since the dog left the vet and she seems fine. Has anyone else been through xylitol ingestion with their dog? What happened?
Signs that your dog might have ingested products containing xylitol as a sweetener can show up quickly, sometimes within 30 minutes of eating the product. According to Dr. Eric Dunayer, a veterinarian and toxicologist for the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center, dogs that have ingested small amounts of xylitol might be affected but not show signs until up to 12 hours afterward. Signs your dog has ingested a product containing xylitol as a sweetener include an abrupt drop in blood sugar, vomiting, depression, loss of coordination and seizures.
